Plantago is classed by herbalists as a refrigerant. This means that it cools hot and inflamed tissues. As a gentle astringent, it tightens engorged and inflamed tissues, but it is also a demulcent, soothing raw and sore tissues. Ribwort has a particular affinity for the mucous membranes and I love to use it for the nasal passages, the bronchi, the bladder wall and sometimes the stomach.44

Ribwort is a simple hay-fever remedy. Do be a bit careful, because some people are allergic to the pollen, but I have never known anyone have a reaction to the leaf. The simplest way to use ribwort, or waybread if you prefer its ancient name, is simply to pluck a leaf and chew it. Make sure that you chew the leaf, sucking out all the juices, and then spit out the hard ribs. You will find that it quickly soothes streaming hay fever. It is not the most delicious taste, but when the juices are in the mouth, they quickly dissolve through the thin tissues of your mouth cavity into the bloodstream, which is why you really need to chew and suck those juices.
